| Careyhurst was named after the late Joseph M. Carey, founder of one of Wyoming's first families, and a man who served his state as both governor and senator and whose son, Robert D. Carey, also filled both high positions. Joseph Carey originally was a young lawyer in Philadelphia who stumped the east for General Grant during the latter's successful campaign for the presidency. As a reward, young Carey was appointed territorial district attorney for Wyoming. (WPA) Named for Hon. John (sic) M. Carey, United States Senator from Wyoming, who owned large tracts of land along the Platte River in this vicinity. (Stennett) One of the largest ranches in Wyoming, the estate of Senator Robert D. Carey who served as U.S. Senator from 1931 to 1936.
