Origin Of Name:Established in 1868 and named for Major General Frederick Steele of Civil War fame. (Annals of Wyoming 14:3) Fort Fred Steele was located on the North Platte River on the Union Pacific Railroad between Hanna and Rawlins. The fort was named for General Frederick Steele of Mexican and Civil War fame, who died January 12, 1868. The fort was used as a military post from June 30, 1868 to August 7, 1886. (WPA)
