Origin Of Name:Settled in 1889 and named for Henry Thayne, who was the first merchant in the town. (WPA) Thayne Post Office was established on May 8, 1891 in Uinta County prior to the formation of Lincoln County. The first postmaster was Mrs. Laura Thayne. (Wyoming Post Offices) First known as Glencoe. Named by the McFarlane and Baxter families for a town in their native Scotland. On May 8, 1891 a post office was established. Since there was already a Glencoe, Wyoming post office, the town was named Thayne for the people who owned the log cabin where the post office was located. The name of the town, as far as the church was concerned, was not changed until the early 1900's. (Star Valley and its Communities) "Thayne ... Lincoln county, Wyoming, is a farming settlement situated in the lower Salt River Valley, founded in 1888 and organized' as a Ward in 1891, named Glencoe. This was changed in 1902 and the ward named Thayne, in honor of Henry Thayne, one of the first settlers of the place." (Jenson)
