Sweetwater Bridge Station |
This post was established in 1861 to protect the Pacific telegraph line and emigrants. It was abandoned in 1867. (WPA) A crossing of the Sweetwater River which was the site of the Sweetwater Station, a military post for the protection of emigrants. (Wyoming Guide) A one-company military post was established here (1861) during the Civil War to protect emigrants and the first transcontinental telegraph line. Lt. Caspar Collins was stationed here. The station had a 15-foot palisade with a blockhouse at the corner. There was a bridge over the Sweetwater River and a stage station and Pony Express Station located here. William Henry Jackson painted a watercolor of "Sweetwater Station near Independence Rock." |
