Origin Of Name:Named for John Upton, who was a member of the James Stuart mining expedition of 1864. Upton has a bentonite plant and stockyards. Once called "Iron Town," it is now a ranching center. (WPA) Farther up the track is Upton, named for A. Z. Upton who had played an important part in the town's development. Before its incorporation in 1909, Upton was known as Merino, and before Merino, as Iron City. (Bits and Pieces 1:1)
