Named after M. S. Kemmerer who was a New York capitalist. He became interested in the coal mines and the mines and the town were named after him. (WPA) In 1897, P.J. Quealy, coal inspector for Wyoming, recognized the value of coal veins being opened near Diamondville. He obtained the backing of Mahlon S. Kemmerer of Mauch Chunk, Pennsylvania, and organized a mining company here. (Annals of Wyoming 14:3) |
