Named after the waters near the crest of the Continental Divide that run towards the Atlantic Ocean in the neighborhood of the town. Atlantic City was one of the gold mining camps that sprang into life a little after the big strike at South Pass in 1867. Once its business district ran along both sides of the gulch and it housed about 2,000 people. Although its boom was less spectacular than South Pass, the town of Atlantic City survived longer.
