The ridge flanks the Sweetwater River on both sides. It is very stony and sits at a NW-SE axis. Emigrants had to pass over this barrier in following the original Oregon Trail. It is a windswept area about two miles square and rises about 400 to 500 feet above the river. Well-defined Oregon Trail ruts are still visible in the area. Diarists of 1846-1849 describe difficulties in crossing. (Wyoming Recreation Commission, 1984) |
