Named for the city of Albany, New York. Albany, New York was named for the Duke of York, whose Scotch title was "Duke of Albany," later James II of England. (Gannett, 1905) Named for the city of Albany, New York, by a former resident of that place who served in the Dakota Territorial Legislature. It was one of the four original counties in existence prior to the organization of Wyoming as a territory. County seat is in Laramie. (WPA) Albany County was carved from the western part of Laramie County the following December, and Laramie City became its county seat. Charles Bradley christened the baby Albany to honor the capital city of his native state, New York. Its birth coincided with the building of the first transcontinental railway.
