Named for the Arapahoe Indian tribe. Arapahoe was established by the Indian Service in 1880 as a sub-agency for the Arapahoe tribe, who was placed on the eastern part of the Shoshone Reservation between the Big Wind and Popo Agie rivers in 1879. John C. Burnett operated a trading store there, which, at one time was the largest retail store in Fremont County. (WPA) The town was platted by the Pioneer Town Site Company and was named from a nearby Arapahoe Indian reservation. The name is that of a noted Indian tribe and signifies "traders."
