The stream called Fourche Amere (Bitter Fork) by Fremont is now simply known as Cottonwood Creek. (Thwaites) We halted to noon on the Fourche Amere, so called from being timbered principally with the Liard amere, (a species of poplar), with which the valley of the little stream is tolerably well wooded and which, with large expansive summits, grows to the height of sixty to seventy feet. (Fremont)
