Town takes its name from the mountain range south of it, named in the early days because of the large herds of elk that pastured on the range. Elk Mountain has an electric light plant, a large sawmill, several general stores, hotel, post-office, school, and a telephone exchange of the Inter-mountain Telephone Company. (WPA) Named after Elk Mountain, the peak at the north end of the Medicine Bow Range and a few miles southwest of the town. (Annals of Wyoming 15:1)
