Nuphar is a genus of plants with about 10 species distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere including the common yellow water lily, cow lily, or spatterdock (Nuphar advena) of eastern North America. (Encyclopædia Britannica) Nuphar is a genus of yellow pond lily which is the common water-lily of high mountain lakes. The name is a Greek word which is said to have been derived from an Egyptian word which originally applied to the lily of the Ne River. The Yellowstone pond lily is Nuphar Polysepalum. Apparently this plant was growing on or near the pond at the time it was named in or about 1888. The name was given by members of the Hague parties of the USGS, and probably by geologist Walter Weed.
