Cokeville was once a trading post for trappers and Indians. The first white settler was John Bourns who came in 1874. Originally called "Smith's Fork", the name was changed to Cokeville because of the large deposits of coking coal nearby. (WPA) "Cokeville ..., Uintah county, Wyoming, is a small railway town and farming settlement where coke is being burned." (Jenson)
