Rock River
Metadata
Name:Rock River
Origin Of Name:The little town of Rock River came into existence almost over night. In 1898 the Union Pacific Railroad decided to change the main line of the railroad between the Laramie River crossing and Medicine Bow, thus abandoning the cow town of Rock Creek. After the Union Pacific changed the railroad bed west of the old Rock Creek Station, it was necessary to give the station a different name from Rock Creek since they maintained a post office for several years after the station was removed. It was therefore given the name of Rock River in 1901. (WPA) Just before reaching Rock River station the train crosses the river of the same name, and good exposures of the Steele shales may be seen in the bluffs in the north bank.
