Received its name from the rich supply of coal which occurs within its boundaries. Organized in 1870, Carbon County was one of the four original counties existing when the Territory of Wyoming was created, and, at that time, included within its area more than one fifth of the area of the state. County seat is in Rawlins. (WPA)
