River, rising in Gallatin Lake in Gallatin Range, Yellowstone National Park, and emptying into Missouri River, Gallatin County, Mont. (Decisions, 1895, 1916) The three forks of the Missouri were named by Lewis and Clark in honor of the president of the United States and his chief advisors, the secretaries of state and of the treasury. The North Fork is called 'The Jefferson', the South 'The Gallatin,' and the one between them 'The Madison.' (WPA)
