Metadata
Name:Ellingwood Glacier
Origin Of Name:Named for Albert R. Ellingwood (1888-1934), a great climber of his day who made a solo ascent of this peak and many other first ascents in the Wind River Range, including Helen, Turret, Warren (1924), Knife Pt, and Sacagawea (1926) (Bonney, 1968) In 1967, the Sublette County Historical Board, thinking that the features were unnamed proposed to the US Board on Geographic Names the names Harrower Glacier and Harrower Peak for what actually were known as Ellingwood Glacier and Ellingwood Peak. The Board on Geographic Names acted on the proposal in 1968, making Harrower Glacier and Harrower Peak the official names. According to Orin Bonney, author of Guide to Wyoming Mountains & Wilderness Areas. the features had been known as Ellingwood Glacier and Peak since at least 1960 when printed as such in Guide to Wyoming Mountains & Wilderness Areas (I960, 1965, 1972). They had been written up in such journals as American Alpine Journal, Appalachia, Summit Magazine. (Orin Bonney, in submission to the US Board on Geographic Names, 1972)
